Lifetime Function & Partitioning

In a multiprogrammed environment, the partition size, the resident set size and the replacement policy used by the virtual memory management system are important in determining the performance of the system. Selection of the partition size that minimizes the space-time is desired because the partition size that results in the lowest space-time corresponds to the greatest lifetime L(m) which is greatest number of references between page faults.

The following demonstration illustrates the relationship between the lifetime curve and the partition size with repect to system throughput and response time. After you have investigated this relationship, go on to the discussion for this station.
