For large processes, the page table can require quite a lot of room in the main memory. To keep the page table from squeezing out the process itself, many computers use a multilevel page table. The virtual address of the page is partitioned so that the page table is divided into a hierarchy of page tables and the whole page table need not be in memory all the time.
